Nigerian Law on Homosexuality
Nigerian Law on Homosexuality
According to the free dictionary,Homosexuality can be defined as a sexual attraction to someone of the same sex .The lay man do refer homosexuality as Gay but in the real sense;The term lesbianism is used to refer a situation when a girl is sexually attracted to a girl while the term gay is used to refer to a situation where  a man is  sexually attracted to a man. Nigerian law on homosexuality was signed by the former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan  in this law there is no legal protection protecting Homosexuals against discrimination in Nigeria, because of this motion, very few homosexuals are open about their orientation that is they are scared of “coming out”.
The Nigerian law on homosexuals was signed and passed in secrecy and yet it drew international attention in the way of condemnation from countries such as united states and Britain (our colonial masters).Nigeria being a country who holds religion and belief at high esteem considers Homosexualism as a deviation from nature.
Nigeria a country with up to 170 million people whose religion is split mainly between Christianity and Islam and yet none of these religion are supporting homosexuality .The sharia law  which governs the 12 northern states in Nigeria whose form of religion is Islam has it that anyone who is an offender should be killed by stoning , part of Nigeria which is not governed by sharia law has it that its offenders are punished by being imprisoned by 14 years.
In southern part of Nigeria the criminal code finds homosexuality a crime which is punishable under the law. Nigerian Law on homosexuality for southern part  can be found in  chapter 21 Section 214 it states:
Any person who
a] has carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature
c]permits a male person to have carnal knowledge of him or her against the order of nature
is guilty of a felony ,and is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years
In northern part of Nigeria and other parts of Nigeria who has adopted the sharia law are also under the Nigerian law of homosexuality.  In section 284 page 69 which provides that ;
Whoever has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man , woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to fourteen years and shall also be liable to fine.
This kind of crime is seen as a sacrilege no wonder the two main form of religion in Nigeria have seen this as a sin both in the eyes of God and man. Both religions do not conduct marriage between Homosexuals. The western part of the world has accepted this form of sexuality as a normal part of the world but since our constitution doesn’t accommodate it ,it is better to stay away from this way of life or any form of homosexual gathering ,club, association and accommodation.
